Workshop 1 Ð Heraldry

Study of the codes of heraldry through playful and creative activities
Children aged 8 to 12

Contents of the workshop (2,5 hours) :

- Presentation of the different elements of a coat of arms
- Discovery visit to the museum
- Heraldry game - Designing a coat of arms

Goals :

Children learn to recognise the codes of heraldry and to use them creating their own coat of arms.

Workshop 2 Ð Military architecture in the Middle Ages

Discovering of the system of defence of the castle being either attackers or defenders. Children aged 9 to 14

Contents of the workshop (2,5 hours) :
- Showing a documentary about the evolution of the fortified castle
- A tracking game exploring the castle
- Evaluation and summary

Goals :
Having identified all the defensive elements of the castle through the mission that has been entrusted to them, children possess a perfect knowledge of its defensive system.

Workshop 3 Ð Siege and weapon techniques of the Middle Ages

Presentation of siege warfare and handling offensive and defensive weapons
Children aged 8 to 13

Contents of the workshop (2,5 hours) :
- Explanation of the techniques of attacking a castle
- Presentation of selected weapons and trying on a defensive costume (one child)
- Practice of shooting the crossbow and demonstration of shooting with a trebuchet
- Evaluation test through a gap text

Goals :
The handling of the weapons gives practical knowledge of the techniques of warfare in the Middle Ages

Workshop 4 Ð The art of calligraphytelier

Initiation to gothic handwriting
Children aged 8 to 12

Contents of the workshop (2,5 hours) :
- Presentation of the history of handwriting
- Discovering reproductions of miniatures in the museum
- Initiation to gothic handwriting
- Writing a page with the stylus éroulement de l'atelier

Goals :
Children are initiated into gothic handwriting and composing an illuminated letter. They learn how to use a new tool, the stylus

Workshop 5 Ð Measures and measuring in the Middle Ages

Discovering the measure system of the Middle Ages
Children ages 10 to 13

Contents of the workshop (2,5 hours) :
- Presentation of measuring in the Middle Ages
- Construction of the quine or measuring ropes
- Experiment with the thirteen-knot rope
- Construction of a model of a trebuchet (1 model per class)

Goals : Children learn how to measure with feet and thumbs (inches) and use this knowledge building a model

After selecting your type of visit, please contact us to plan the chosen activity according to availability. The heritage workshops need to be confirmed by sending us the enclosed form. Please specify the desired workshop, the level of education, the date, the timings and the names of those responsible. The workshops are open to schools from 1 September to 30 June.
